Upon graduating New York University's film program, Stern cut his teeth as a Line Producer and Post-Production Supervisor on children's and educational television -- Afterschool Specials, a series of HBO films, and a series for the Children's Television Workshop.

His first foray into feature films was as Line Producer of DAYTRIPPERS. Produced at the impossibly low budget of $75,000, DAYTRIPPERS went on to international acclaim after its success at the Cannes Film Festival. Its one-of-a-kind cast showcased Stanley Tucci, Cambell Scott, Leiv Schreiver, Hope Davis, Parker Posey, Anne Meara, and Marcia Gay Harden. He returned to television as Supervising Producer of two period "dramedy" series for American Movie Classics. The first, REMEMBER WENN, ran for four seasons and garnered the Monitor Award. The next, THE ROYALE was nominated for an Emmy Award. Following, he was Producer of a third AMC sitcom, THE PARAMOUR (starring Kristin Chenoweth), set in Hollywood in the 1950's.

In the past five years, Stern was Producer of four feature films. The suspense-thriller OXYGEN, starring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (THE PIANIST) and Maura Tierney, was an international financial success. This was followed by the psychological-thriller MEXICO CITY (starring Stacy Edwards & Robert Patrick), which was released by Miramax/Dimension. More recently, Stern was Producer of SCOTLAND, PA, a comedy version of "MacBeth" set in a 1970's fast-food restaurant. Starring Christopher Walken, Maura Tierney, James LeGros, and Andy Dick, it premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically by Lot 47 Films in 2002. The film was recently brought out on home video, very successfully, as the flagship release for Sundance.

As a screenwriter, Stern has written two screenplays for Academy Award nominated director Juan Jose Campanella and has a background as a script reader for Warner Bros., amongst others, and as a development executive for Turtleback Productions. He just wrapped production on the indie feature DIGGERS (starring Lauren Ambrose, Paul Rudd, Ron Eldard, and Josh Hamilton) for HDNet Films. Stern was also a Producer of HBO's film of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (with Eve Ensler) and numerous television commercials. In addition, he works regularly as a segment producer and assistant director for documentary programming for MTV, Showtime, and other cable channels. Stern's television programs have been nominated for Emmy and CableAce Awards, while Stern himself has been nominated for an Emmy and was awarded the Humanitas Prize.
